Old Brentwoods 7 Stanford 2nd XV 35 After two weeks of disappointing results the seconds showed their true colours this weekend, with a resounding victory over a very strong Old Brentwoods, 35-7. With the Thirds game cancelled, skipper Jackson could play around with a few positions. From forwards to the backs all players were up for this game. With tries from the forwards after some good runs from the backs, Paul Newberry at number 8 was helped over the line by Anderson playing at prop for the first time. This spurred the backs on and with a pick up from French at inside centre in his own half cut through the oppositions defence, with Old Brentwoods heads down the Stanford forwards ran the ball towards the try line, but some strong defence forced a line out for OBRFC on their 5 metre line. An over throw went straight into the arms of Anderson who fell over the line with a look of complete surprise on his face. At half time the Skipper made a few more tinkers with the team. From the kick-off French went on a searing run to score under the posts, Grant Ferguson making the kick again. Late in the match, Paul Newberry got a yellow card for what could only be described as stupidity from the Number 8 lying on the ball (again). While he was off, the forwards pushed forward and Big Les Martin crashed over the line. With 5 minutes to go the Skipper took himself off to give the young Fitzpatrick a run out. Old Brentwoods took advantage of a quick tap penalty and a borrowed Stanford player dropped down on the ball. Great match all round, with the two internationals watched by both teams; a great day for all. |
