Stanford II 43 Runwell Wyverns 7

Why not try the Club Forum?

Stanford 2nds welcomed the Runwell Wyverns side to the Recreation Ground for the second time this season. The visitors were looking to gain revenge for their earlier defeat but Stanford had other ideas.

Stanford quickly got into their stride and Rhys Smith-Allen playing on the wing crossed the line in Stanfords first visit to Runwells half. The home teams forwards were in great form and dominated the early exchanges with second rows Lee Webb and Les Martin bullying the opposition with bullish runs. Stanford scored again, this time from a break from centre Jason Collier who crashed through the would be tacklers to score under the posts.

It was pretty much one-way traffic and nearly every venture into opposition territory led to a try. The Runwell backs were starved of possession and had to live off scraps. The Stanford pack drove back their opposition at scrums and competed well to spoil the lineouts. Steve Barter, Paul Newberry and Reece Anderson were awesome in the loose and caused no end of problems for Runwell.

The scoreboard kept ticking over with tries from Wayne Collier (2), Barry Stevens, Russell Jackson, and Mark Shuttlewood. Grant Fergusson had another good day with the boot and converted 4/7 tries.

The home side boasted 10 subs so in the second half Stanford was able to ring the changes and give everyone a game. Matt Hornsby made an immediate impact in the lineout and Matt Rumble added another dimension to the talented backs.

Runwell found the going tough and Stanford had to lend them several players to make a contest of it. Dan Langley was rewarded for his services by scoring a consolation try for Runwell late in the second half. He had an excellent game and prevented several of the Stanford players from scoring by weaselling his way under them to keep the ball held up.

With such good numbers it wont be too long before Stanford will be looking to start up a third team. Anyone interested in Stanford RFC should check out the club website at www.stanfordrugby.co.uk .

The final score was Stanford 2nds 43 –  Runwell Wyverns 2nds 7
