Stanford II 31 Brentwood III 17

Why not try the Club Forum?

Stanford 2nds welcomed the Brentwood 3rds to the Recreation Ground expecting a tough game after losing against the same opposition earlier in the season. Stanford side was looking forwards to gaining revenge. Brentwood arrived four players short and had to borrow players from the home side.

Stanford quickly got into their stride and centre Scott Cooper sliced his way through a stunned Brentwood back line in the first minute of the game. Grant Ferguson kicked the extra points. Brentwood replied with a classy try from borrowed winger Ricky Coppard.  The home teams forwards lineout was in great form and dominated the early exchanges with Steve Barter and Paul Newberry making clean catches and causing problems for the opposition jumpers.

Full back Peter Meddlycott benefited from some slick ball handling from the talented Stanford backs to score a try in the corner. Stanford scored their third try after winger Danny Jackson made a clean break and crashed through the centre of the field to score under the posts. Ferguson converted to make the score 19 – 5 at half time

Halfbacks Russell Jackson and Barry Stevens were having a great game and orchestrated some well-worked plays. Jackson sold more dummies than Mothercare and Stevens abrasive running and no nonsense tackling caused no end of problems for the visitors. Scrums were solid and provided plenty of quality back for the backs.

The second half saw the home side make a number of substitutions and give everyone a game. Matt Rumble made an immediate impact on the wing and linked up well with a series of passes with Paul Newberry that led to Newberry getting a try.

Brentwood worked hard and got a well-deserved try after Stanford’s concentration lapsed. The visiting team pressed and pressed and scored again and converted to make the score 24 – 17. This forced Stanford to get their act together and get back into ascendancy and after a good period of pressure, full back Peter Meddlycott got his second try and Ferguson’s boot made the final score a satisfying 31- 17.
