A huge crowd showed up and gave massive support to the Ladies who took to the pitch for their first game of rugby and they were not disappointed. The effort and skill levels far exceeded everyones expectations and so produced a very good and exciting game. Stanford faced a strong breeze in the first half and were forced to run everything, which rapidly sapped their strength, but to the ladies credit they produced several try scoring opportunities but were only able to cross Thames line once. This try was scored by winger Chloe Gounden who after a series of passes received the ball 35 metres from the try line and had to race towards the line with the Thames defenders hard on her heels. The visitors put together some fine moves and younger legs exploited gaps in Stanford's defence.
The second half found Stanford with the breeze at their backs but Thames never really gave them time to use the boot and relieve the pressure, the hard ground also took it`s toll with many of the girls leaving the pitch after taking heavy knocks, Thames started to control the game late on but Stanfords ladies showed true grit by producing the try of the game, after several rucks won by the forwards it was released to the backs who put together a series of passes straight from the textbook. This was finished off by a fine run by outside centre Angela Anderson.
The game was played in a hard and fair manner and it is to both teams credit and they should be rightly proud of themselves. |
