Stanford were taught a lesson in the basics of rugby by a superb Upminster outfit. The only positive for the home side was the amount of effort put in by the lads in what must have been demoralising circumstances.
The visitors were superior in every aspect of the game, including tackling, ball handling and ball retention. Stanford were camped on their own line for most of the match, and hardly won a ruck, maul or scrum all day and simply could not cope with wave after wave of attacks.
The well drilled and knowledgable Upminster side displayed a tremendous understanding of the game far beyond their years.
Upminster will certainly take some beating this season and the Stanford coaches will surely have to rethink their approach. |

STANFORD 15 UPMINSTER 15
This turned out to be one of the most enjoyable matches of the season so far. In the first half, with a slight slope and brisk breeze at their back, the visitors piled on the pressure. Stanford showed great determination in defence and counter attacked at every opportunity, the pressure on the home side finally allowing Upminster to go in at half time 3 tries ahead.
3 tries down against such opposition would seem an impossible task but Stanford used the conditions superbly, mixing up the attacks with fine handling and kicking out of defence, chasing every ball and putting Upminsters defence under the same pressure had they experienced in the first half. It was during one such attack that Upminster were caught behind their own try line and were harried into spilling the ball, which was pounced on by the ever busy Dominic McDonald.
Stanford's forwards then seemed to step up a gear, forcing their opposition into a series of mistakes. A panic pass was intercepted by James Kitchen who ran in a nice try. Time was running out, but the home side continued the pressure and were rewarded with a line out 15 metres from the line. After winning clean ball, it was passed to the backs, who confidently ran a move which worked perfectly, allowing Sean Bunney to breach a bewildered Upminster defence.
An excellent game to watch and a fair result, well done lads!.
