Stanford U7's were put into a very strong pool. And while being short of a few regular players and therefore having to borrow a couple of players from the U8's, found the going a little tough.
Although coming last in the pool after losing all 5 games, they still played with their heads held high and with great determination scored some great tries and in places showed some great tagging in defence. Results

UNDER 8
Stanford's under 8's recent run of good results came to an end at Chingford this weekend, with 2 defeats, 1 draw and 1 win in the group stages.
STANFORD 20 ASHFORD 25
A good start to this game in which Stanford led 20-5 at half time was undone as Ashford scored 4 unanswered tries in the second half. Ashford played some excellent rugby in this game and went on to top the group, so the defeat should be put into perspective. Stanford also had a Vinny Gordon "try" disallowed which added to the frustration of losing this game.
Try scorers were Jack Knight 2, Max Clarke and Ben Kelly
STANFORD 30 BRENTWOOD 30
A second frustrating result as Stanford led 30-25 with last play called only for Stanford to put the ball down over the try line believing they had scored, only for it to be disallowed and a quick thinking Brentwood player picking it up and running the length of the pitch to equalise. However this was another good performance against a very good side, the highlight of which was the way Max Clarke terrorised the Brentwood defence with his size and pace (bring on contact if this is the effect he has at tag).
Try scorers were Max Clarke 4 and Vinny Gordon 2
STANFORD 20 WOODFORD 40
The only true bad performance of the day as Stanford let woodford gain a well deserved revenge for their defeat in the Essex plate final. The only highlight of this game was a Finlay Seaman try which earned him the parent's player of the day award and the biggest cheer from the Stanford supporters. Well done Finlay.
Try scorers were Vinny Gordon 2, Finlay Seaman and Jack Knight
STANFORD 45 WANSTEAD 25
The only win of the day came at the end with an easy win over the weakest team in the group. Highlight here was Johnny's second try when he took the ball from a restart half the length of the field past all 7 defenders , none of whom could tag him.
Try scorers were Johnny Parker 2, Jack Knight 2,Vinny Gordon 2, Ben Kelly 2 and Max Clarke |

Group Stages
CHINGFORD 0 STANFORD 15
Stanford started well in this game and went on to an easy win against the hosts.
Scorers: Sam Moran 3
WANSTEAD 15 STANFORD 30
After a good start the boys had to dig deep, conceding 3 tries for the first time in 2 seasons. However, the boys put together some impressive phases of play.
Scorers:- Callum Jones, Nico Pike 2, Aiden Cronin, Daniel McAllister 2.
BURNHAM 5 STANFORD 20
Stanford managed to pull themselves together to put in a great performance, showing why they are such a force to be reckoned with at under 10's rugby.
Scorers:- Albert Aldham, Aiden Cronin, Sam Moran, Charlie Downes.
WOODFORD 10 STANFORD 5
In a must win game to go on to the cup final the boys were slow to start and struggled against a very ordinary Woodford side and a less then impressive referee. Both coaches and parents alike feel that the boys were never going to win this game as decision after decision went against them.
Scorers: Sam Moran
Plate Final
WESTCLIFF 10 STANFORD 5
Finishing runners up the boys went forward to the plate final but never looked like winning after a disappointing afternoon.
Scorers:- Daniel McAllister
Coaches comments: Both Daren and Gary are immensely proud of all of the boys. We all need to learn from the last two festivals and are sure that they will become stronger and stronger. |
UNDER 11 Although Stanford under 11's turned up at Chingford with only 10 players due to other commitments on the day, they performed with great courage and determination in adversity. In fact they even managed a two try victory against Brentwood!
STANFORD 0 PULBOROUGH 20
The Sussex side were strong and physical, and with the Stanford scrum weakened by missing personnel, all the possession went to Pulborough.
Sespite this, Stanford tackled bravely and were unlucky not to score. STANFORD 0 THURROCK 20
Stanford were outplayed by a strong Thurrock side, with the extra manpower being decisive. Stanford again defended bravely, but with several players out of position could not stem the tide. STANFORD 10 BRENTWOOD 0
A fantastic team performance saw the Stanford players perform with great passion to beat Brewtwood despite being outnumbered by 12 to 10.
The highlight was a tremendous run by second row Louis Webb which saw him power over the opposition line. He even scared the spectators, such was his ferocity! Tries: Dan O'Flaherty, Louis Webb.
STANFORD 0 BURNHAM 15
Although beaten by a good Burnham side, Stanford were unlucky not to be closer on the scoreboard and the score did not reflect the tremendous battle that the outnumbered Stanford side again put up. |
UNDER 12
STANFORD 0 BRENTWOOD 0
It was,as expected, a very tough opener for the Stanford lads. Brentwood were very strong in the scrum and ruck, Stanford struggled to win their own ball and when they did win it they unusually lost it again, Both teams came close to scoring but a high standard of tackling kept the score even. It was probable that one of these two teams would top the group to progress to the final.
CHINGFORD 0 STANFORD 25
Stanford played very well in their second game against the hosts, they won comfortably but it looked like wasted oppertunities could rob them of that place in the final. It all depended on how many Brentwood won by.
Tries by; Sean Houlihan 2, Dominic McDonald, Jacob Dennis, Musa Yusuff.
WOODFORD 0 STANFORD 45
In the last group game the fate of the Stanford lads was in their own hands, due to Brentwoods scores the borough boys had to score nine unanswered tries against Woodford, a very tall order considering it was only 6 minutes each way. the lads came out firing on all cylinders and put together a very clinical first half performance which saw them leading 25 - 0. The second half was a real nail biter with Stanford scoring two quick tries, but were then frustrated by Woodford who cleverly tied up many attacks. The crowed were going wild and with ony two minutes on the clock it did not look likely that Stanford would reach their second consecutive final but then gaps appeared which allowed a try and it was all down the final attack in the dying seconds, slick passing through the backs again created a half chance in the corner and i think the noise from the crowd carried the winger over the try line. A great acheivment.
Tries By: Sean Houlihan 4, Dominic McDonald 2, Solomon Lugmeyer, Ryan Cronin, Jacob Dennis.
CUP FINAL
STANFORD 0 WESTCLIFF 10
Unfortunately Stanford were, quite simply, beaten by the better team on the day. It may have been the pressure of the last game but they seemed to be playing at 70% and with Westcliff desperate to avenge the two previous meetings they just did not have enough in the tank. It was not one way traffic by any means, but Westcliff seemed to be that much hungrier and that was the difference between the teams.A great overall performance and a great end to an outstanding season, well done lads!!. |
